Welcome

Welcome to BIODANZAsrt School Brighton
Brighton has everything you can want, culture, the sea, countryside, parks, shops, excellent restaurants and a colourful history. All these different elements make Brighton a stimulating place to visit. It is more than London-by-the-sea it is Brighton.

I am proud to be the director of the first school of The
BIODANZAsrt System School - Brighton. I have been teaching BIODANZAsrt in Brighton since 1996 and have seen this exciting city grow. Brighton today has managed to diversify in the attractions it has to offer to such an extent that it is now an important cultural centre, yearly hosting one of the largest arts festival in Europe second only to Edinburgh. A yearly film festival also taps into its long associations as a leading centre of the emerging British film industry.

What leads me to open our school here is the growing interest in Dance as an artistic expression for all.
BIODANZAsrt is internationally renowned and our dynamic and innovative training course draws students and teachers from throughout the UK and worldwide to experience this beautiful part of the world. I welcome all prospective student teachers from around the world and in particular I encourage students native to this area to train as future teachers so as to make BIODANZAsrt widely available and part of our culture here in the South of England.
I am delighted that you are considering joining us for your studies and hope I may welcome you to The
BIODANZAsrt School - Brighton UK
Marita Sanguinetti - director.

The BIODANZAsrt School – Brighton welcomes students from al backgrounds therefore certain applicants interested in becoming BIODANZAsrt teachers may have had little if any dance education. For this reason all students will have the opportunity to attend complementary dance classes to further their skills and achieve a wider vocabulary of movement.
“An accomplished
BIODANZAsrt teacher knows how to articulate fluently in dance, just as a teacher of English is required to have a wide vocabulary and a good understanding of the written word. The ability to see that teaching BIODANZAsrt with such fluency and that accurate, clear articulation, will significantly aid the teacher to edify from an authentic unique expression of who they are and will enable them to create classes in their own unique manner. Our teaching staff supports the student teachers to achieve their own style, we believe that when teachers make their classes truly their own they will have success in filling their future classes attracting exactly the people they want to work with.”
Tony O’Connor, Didactic Teacher of BIODANZAsrt.

Introduction

Introduction to BIODANZAsrt
Rolando Toro first created The
BIODANZAsrt when he was working as a young doctor in Chile. In the years that followed he drew upon his years of study in science, anthropology and the arts to develop BIODANZAsrt beautiful dances and exercises. Today Professor Toro has returned to his beloved Chile and still teaches classes and training courses all over the world.

The main objectives of the
BIODANZAsrt system are to increase the general state of mental and physical health and to gain awareness of our movement as we dance. Biodanza is a dance form that takes its gestures and expressions from everyday movements and makes them conscious. This practice results in improving our choices as to how to live each moment of our every day life in healthy, mindful and expressive ways.

BIODANZAsrt combines dance, music and community building into a dance form that enables each student to work towards his or her full potential as a healthy individual. It teaches us what it means to put creativity into all parts of our life. Most importantly we participate in an in-depthstudy of the body and its movement and, making our experience conscious through this observation, we become aware of how we can reach higher levels of integration, firstly within ourselves and then with the world... a meditation in dance.

BIODANZAsrt creates a space in which something unthought-of, unimagined and full of wonder can take visible form as this is a way of knowledge that can bring us to the very centre of creativity, to that full involvement in the movement without calculation or reserve, which means health and freedom. It provides us with an opportunity to come and dance the story that expresses our unique selves and our life and in doing so get closer to knowing what it is we need to create for ourselves to live our lives with more intensity, health and joy. Personally I have found BIODANZAsrt an inspiration that has enabled me to take part in my life more fully instead of just being a spectator of it and I have seen in my students a keenness to commit to do the challenging work necessary for them to succeed in reaching their full potential”.

Teacher Training Course

Teacher Training Course
Aims, Philosophy and Plan of Study
The The
BIODANZAsrt – Brighton aims to introduce The BIODANZAsrt to the South of England by training the first teachers in and around Brighton to a world class standard and therefore qualifying them to teach not only in the South of England but all over the UK and worldwide.
Our teaching staff aim to create a dynamic learning environment where student teachers can study and combine the theory, method and standards of the The
BIODANZAsrt. In this setting the student can use the time in the class to its most effective as in addition to the course syllabus, they are taught and encouraged to cultivate a The BIODANZAsrt practice as a regular discipline. This will enhance not only their teacher training study but their commitment to this self-discipline also establishes an opening in their daily lives in which they can become aware of what is healthy and meaningful for them as prospective teachers. From these objectives the ways to creating healthy and successful future The BIODANZAsrt groups and classes are revealed to them.
It is my belief that if The
BIODANZAsrt were taught to every child in every school from nursery school to University and if, from then on, everyone was encouraged to make dance a part of their lives along side their physical, mental and creative expressive needs, each person would have the opportunity to reach their full potential in life. It is The The BIODANZAsrt School of Brighton’s aim to make this form of education reality and make dance accessible and vital to everyone. For dance to be considered a crucial and healthy part of everyday life we must firstly, as individuals, experience it as vitalising. To dance is to experience the grace of giving life’s expression artistic form. Only when dance is experienced, valued and accepted as an everyday vital necessity for health and well being can we as individuals and communities experience it’s nourishing vitality. The history of dance reaches back to primitive man the ancient Athenians, medieval times, the Renaissance and on to the present day. The evolution of dance runs parallel to and is reflected in the awakening and development of these proceeding ages bringing us to the present day where we can study and follow these parallels and expand insight into our own development, survival and health. It would be of great benefit for us all to know our history with such relevance to our health and growth.

To study the body and its movement is the first step towards this wisdom. Every movement and gesture we make is dance. It is to reach for our furthest dreams. Our body houses our dreams and receives our experiences. It is the body that moves and makes music and emotion visible, dance. All art forms are mediums with which we can unite, express, record and communicate our experiences. Movement is the physical starting point of expression and the art, which expresses emotional values, is dance. So to dance one must study and explore and know movement. Art in all its forms follows and is especially adapted to this ideal of education for it is only in art that all the aspects of man’s complex nature is united and expressed.
Before all else it is our aim as the first The
BIODANZAsrt in Brighton to create teachers that are useful, healthy examples to their future students. This we do by modelling to them the benefits of knowing our own bodies, the depth of our resources, our dance/ourselves and how to make the relationship we have with the world conscious.”

The course aims to stimulate reflective practice, research and analysis and to engage in dialogue with a cross section of professional The
BIODANZAsrt teachers and lecturers. The theory of The BIODANZAsrt, its fundamentals and practice are studied in depth and there are many opportunities to follow specific interest. The course’s twenty-seven subjects will be given in the order outlined in this prospectus.

Written Work and Thesis

Written Work and Thesis
Students are required to write an essay after each subject, a concise written account incorporating theory and practice and including personal comments and reflections. In addition to this students will attend group seminars given by specialists in each subject.
All student teachers will be required to write a thesis on a theoretical or practical subject of The
BIODANZAsrt. The students will attend supporting tutorials during the preparation of this work.
On its completion the Director of the School of Brighton, Marita Sanguinetti MA will assess the thesis 30 days before it is presented to the examining board for final appraisal.
(See graduation for further details).

Practical Study

Practical Studies
All The
BIODANZAsrt student teachers will be expected to be practicing The BIODANZAsrt for their own development and therefore they will be required to attend a weekly The BIODANZAsrt class throughout their Teacher Training. During the two and a half hour class the student concentrates on the highest reality, which is the present moment (called Vivensia) and their body expresses what the moment reveals to them in visible form.
Throughout the teacher training course a great emphasis is placed on the importance of deepening the practice of being mindful of the present moment and of how to develop conscious thoughts, emotions and actions. Furthering Vivensial skills by attending a regular class is a requirement towards achieving the The
BIODANZAsrt teaching qualification.

Related Classes

Other complementary and related classes and lectures are offered throughout the course.

Study of Teaching Methods and Techniques
Seven-week ends of the Teacher Training Course will be entirely devoted to the study of the various techniques and the exact methods of selecting and setting the exercises and dances of The
BIODANZAsrt. Students will learn the semantic principles of the music used in a The BIODANZAsrt class and its specific uses. During this part of the course the student will be taught the model and out line structure from which they will be able to design classes and weekend workshops of The BIODANZAsrt.

Teaching Practice
On completion of the course the student teacher will be required to hold 8 x 2 hour consecutive The
BIODANZAsrt classes, as part of their teaching practice. A Didactic Teacher of The BIODANZAsrt who will guide and assess the progress of the student teacher’s work will attend these classes. After the teaching practice the, teacher will be granted an interim contract and will be invited to continue teaching the existing class with the full support of the School.

Duration and Timetable
The The
BIODANZAsrt Teacher Training Course takes the minimum of three years to complete.
The course consists of 27 training weekends, seminars and tutorials, teaching practice and the presentation of a written thesis to the The
BIODANZAsrt Examining Board. The academic year is divided into three terms- autumn, spring and summer. Students will attend 12 trainings per year, 4 weekends per term. To support their learning the students will receive one textbook per training written by professor Rolando Toro on the corresponding subject.

Final Assessment and Graduation
Two Didactic Teachers and the student’s personal Tutor will attend the presentation of the student’s written thesis and conduct the practical assessment. The student undertaking the examination will select the two external assessors. One of these three examiners will be elected to co-ordinate the whole event. The School will set the time and date of examination and the duration of the assessment will be one hour.
Following the agreed assessment outcome of the examining board the student will receive feedback from the
co-ordinator and the results of the examination by mail.
